This session showcased a series of research abstracts that addressed the legal, policy, and human rights barriers impeding access to HIV services for children and young people worldwide.

Moderated by Yana Panfilova (Teenergizer), this session featured research from Brazil, South Africa, and global data, addressing key issues impacting children and young people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. Leonardo Moura da Silva (Brazilian Network of Adolescents and Young People Living with HIV/AIDS) shared insights into the experiences of youth in accessing HIV services in Brazil. Joyce Ouma (Y+) presented an assessment of the gender sensitivity in topics and language used at IAS conferences leading up to AIDS 2024. Matthew Kavanagh (Georgetown University) offered global research on the age of access to HIV testing and treatment. Nokuthula Heath (Zoe-Life) emphasized the importance of supporting families of children and young people living with and affected by HIV. Dithuso Confidence Monare (University of the Free State) highlighted the necessity of supporting vulnerable children and youth affected by HIV and AIDS.

The research presented underscored the critical importance of youth-inclusive and youth-centred programming. From advocating for an evidence-based age of access to services that enhances autonomy, to sensitizing healthcare providers on youth rights, and calling for multi-sectoral collaboration to support vulnerable youth, the findings highlight the necessity of a youth-led and centred approach. The principle, “Nothing for us, without us,” resonates through all the research, emphasizing the essential role of youth in shaping the policies and services that affect their lives.
