The session will explore criminalization from the perspective of why criminalization does more harm than good and what criminalized communities and others do to organize themselves to influence policy and legal change and claim their rights. What is the political context? Who is pushing the anti-rights agenda? Which strategies work to respond to this pushback? Who can be allies? What are the funding gaps? Building on case studies from eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, the session will explore effective strategies for communities and those supporting them – within and outside their countries – to not only operate in adverse environments, but also to work for positive legal and policy change.
